The Maritime Correspondents’ Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, on his re-election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization Council, describing the achievement as a major boost for Nigeria’s international profile and a strong endorsement of his reform-driven leadership.

The association said Adeniyi’s return to the helm of the WCO Council reflects the confidence reposed in him by customs administrations across the world and highlights Nigeria’s growing influence in shaping global customs administration and international trade policies.

In a congratulatory statement signed on Thursday by MARCON President, Ismail Aniemu, the organisation commended the Customs boss for what it described as his exemplary leadership, transformative reforms and strong commitment to advancing customs administration in Nigeria and across the global customs community.

Aniemu described Adeniyi’s re-election as a fitting recognition of his exceptional leadership qualities and remarkable contributions to the international customs system.

“Your re-election as Chairperson of the WCO Council is not only a personal achievement but also a proud moment for Nigeria and the African continent. It is a clear demonstration of the confidence the international customs community has in your vision, competence and reform-driven leadership,” he said.

According to MARCON, Adeniyi’s emergence and subsequent re-election as Chairperson of the WCO Council have significantly elevated the profile of the Nigeria Customs Service on the global stage while strengthening Nigeria’s voice in international customs administration.

“This remarkable accomplishment has projected the Nigeria Customs Service onto the global stage and reinforced Nigeria’s standing as a respected voice among nations shaping the future of international customs administration and global trade,” Aniemu added.

The association also credited the Customs chief with introducing far-reaching reforms that have transformed the operations of the Nigeria Customs Service.

It cited the deployment of the B’Odogwu Unified Customs Management System, sustained improvements in revenue generation, stronger anti-smuggling operations, accelerated digital transformation and enhanced stakeholder engagement as some of the initiatives that have repositioned the Service among Africa’s leading customs administrations.

MARCON noted that the reforms have strengthened public confidence in the Service by promoting transparency, operational efficiency and the ease of doing business, while supporting the Federal Government’s trade facilitation agenda.

The organisation expressed optimism that Adeniyi’s renewed mandate at the WCO Council would deepen international cooperation among customs administrations, accelerate global customs modernisation and provide greater opportunities for Nigeria to contribute meaningfully to the formulation of international trade and customs policies.

MARCON further wished the Customs Comptroller-General a successful second term as Chairperson of the WCO Council, reaffirming its support for ongoing reforms aimed at building a more efficient, transparent and globally competitive Nigeria Customs Service.

The association said Adeniyi’s continued leadership at the global Customs body presents another opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its reputation in international trade governance while advancing reforms that improve customs efficiency, revenue collection and cross-border trade facilitation.
