A middle-aged businessman, Kingsley Oshiegbu, was on Wednesday arraigned before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja, for allegedly beating a woman to death.
Oshiegbu was charged with manslaughter, an offence contrary to Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The state prosecutor, Mr. M.T. Adewoye, told the court that the accused, on April 1, 2015, punched Miss Ifeoma Ndidi, to death at No. 7, Majaro Street, Agege, Lagos.
According to the prosecutor, “the defendant had a verbal misunderstanding with the deceased, which led to a heated exchange of words as well as insult.
“Angered by Ndidi’s insults, Oshiegbu punched her on the head, which led to her collapse and eventual death.”
Oshiegbu’s defence counsel, Mr. Shaw Jason, appealed to the court to grant bail to the accused on liberal terms.
“I wish to also notify the court that the defendant has been in prison custody for the past two years,” Jason said.
Justice Oshodi adjourned the matter until June 26, 2017, for ruling on the bail application and trial.
