Economic hardship loomed large over Valentine’s Day celebrations in Lafia, the state capital, as major malls and spots witnessed a stark contrast in turnout and sales of commodities. Despite being a day of love and affection, the economic realities weighed heavily on the festive spirit.

Upon visiting several prominent malls and spots across the city, our correspondent observed a noticeable decline in foot traffic and subdued purchases, painting a picture of subdued celebrations amidst economic challenges.

In an interview with Mr. Oddis Simeon, a seasoned businessman with Pork N Tins, he shared insights into the prevailing circumstances. “This year, the turnout has been noticeably lower compared to previous Valentine’s Day celebrations. People are facing financial constraints, and this reflects in their spending habits,” remarked Mr. Simeon.

According to Mr Donatus Nadi, publisher Eyewitness Newspapers and a seasoned business man explained that the subdued atmosphere in the malls and spots highlighted the strain that economic hardships have placed on individuals and families, forcing many to reconsider their expenditures even on occasions traditionally marked by splurging and celebration.
