The Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa State (SSG), Labaran Shuaibu Magaji, has described local governments as the backbone of Nigeria’s democracy and grassroots development, stressing that meaningful governance must be people-driven and rooted in the community level.

Magaji, who is also the Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassador of Nasarawa State made the assertion in Lafia, yesterday, while briefing journalists on the preparations for a mega solidarity rally in support of President Bola Tinubu and his Renewed Hope agenda.

According to the SSG, local government administration remains the closest tier of government to the people, particularly those in rural communities, where citizens access governance and exercise their fundamental rights.

“Local government is extremely important because it is the closest level of governance to the people. It is at this level, especially in our villages, that many citizens truly feel the impact of government,” he said.

He noted that grassroots development has largely been sustained by the active participation and contributions of the people, adding that governance succeeds best when communities are carried along.

“The people have always made meaningful contributions to the development of this country. Governance has never been about policies imposed from above alone; it is about the people and their participation,” he added.

The SSG reaffirmed the commitment of the Nasarawa State Government to continue working closely with communities, describing citizens as partners in governance rather than mere beneficiaries of government programmes.

“The people are key stakeholders in governance. Our government will continue to work with them to ensure that policies reflect their needs and aspirations,” he stated.

On the planned solidarity rally, Magaji said the event is aimed at appreciating President Tinubu for his reform-driven leadership and commitment to national development through wide-ranging economic and social reforms.

He also commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for what he described as prudent management of state resources and sustained focus on development, even as his administration approaches the final phase of its tenure.

“At a time when many administrations slow down, the Governor of Nasarawa State has continued to initiate projects with clear timelines for completion. This sense of responsibility and commitment deserves encouragement,” the SSG said.

Magaji disclosed that the rally would also feature the inauguration of local government coordinators and the formal reception of political stakeholders, who have recently aligned with the ruling party in support of the President’s reform agenda.

He praised the media for their role in promoting peace, stability and political harmony in the state, assuring journalists of transparency and cooperation.

“The peace and stability we enjoy in Nasarawa State are not accidental. The media have played a vital role and we sincerely appreciate your professionalism,” he said.

The solidarity rally, he added, is expected to attract party leaders, stakeholders and supporters from across the state and beyond, with the primary objective of expressing appreciation to President Tinubu and reaffirming Nasarawa State’s support for the Renewed Hope agenda.
