LG key to Nigeria’s development – NULGE

The Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NUGLE) has described local government, as catalyst for rural development which has a major role to play in the development of Nigeria.
President of NULGE, Anambra State, Chief Jerry Nnubia, who made this assertion in Awka, yesterday said greater population of Nigerians reside in rural areas, hence, would be easily touched by the programmes of the local government than those of the state and federal governments.
Nnubia who is also the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) explained the position of Anambra NULGE on the ongoing campaign for local government autonomy. He stressed that every part of the country would witness accelerated development should the local government become independent to carry out its programmes and policies.
Describing as false the insinuations that the state NULGE was passive on the agitation for council autonomy, Nnubia said: “What happened was that NULGE in Anambra had earlier scheduled to hold advocacy rally in support of the call for local government autonomy, before we learnt that the State House of Assembly, which is a critical sector in the issue was on recess.
“Now that we learnt that the lawmakers are back, we will fix a date for our own advocacy campaign in Anambra State at the appropriate time.”
