The primary election for the selection of councillors and chairmen in the All Progressives Congress (APC) was on Friday greeted by protests in some local governments.
Some members of the party in Ede-South, Ife-Central, Ife East, and Olorunda Local Governments, rejected the candidates of the party saying some of them have been there for more than two terms.
They condemned what they described as ‘imposition’ of candidates as against the will of the people.
The APC leaders in Osogbo South LCDA told our correspondent that they have endorsed one Maruf Ibrahim in line with their rotational system to ensure equality, expressing displeasure over the imposition of a woman simply identified as Bolanle.
Speaking through Alhaji Oduola Baruwa, the leaders said, “we have agreed to zone the position of the chairman to ward 8 because of the rotational system that we have been using. We picked Maruf Ibrahim, not Bolanle.
“The leaders met and decided to let ward 2 pick the vice chairman. We don’t want to lose our party. The governor should try to amend the decision,” he added.
But, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Regional Integration, Lekan Badmus, who is also from the local government, explained that Bolanle was chosen because the party had pledged a certain slot to the women.
He said, “primary was held across the wards and candidates emerged. With regards to chairmanship slot, the party’s position is that where a woman is contesting, she should be given priority, which is the case in our local council, Osogbo South.”
