From Lateef Dada, Osogbo
Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Osun State, Abiodun Idowu, has asserted that granting autonomy to local governments is key to addressing insecurity in the region.
Speaking to journalists in Osogbo, yesterday, he emphasised that local governments must be empowered to enhance security measures in their communities.
“The solution to insecurity in the country is autonomy for local governments. When local governments have autonomy, they can hire personnel to monitor their areas effectively. State police cannot cover all aspects; local security is essential.”
Idowu also highlighted the current legal legitimacy of APC chairmen holding local government positions, asserting that there are no impediments preventing access to local government funds.
On the tenure of the chairmen, Idowu said: “We are not requesting tenure elongation; we want the court to determine the actual end date of our tenure. We believe our term started on February 10, and we are currently taking this matter to court.”

He stressed that they are pursuing this issue through legal means and are not attempting to act outside the law.
Idowu urged the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to return to work, asserting that they should remain non-partisan and support legitimate local government leadership.
“We are not fighting the workers; we will welcome them back. Stability is returning, and we are closing many legal cases. We feel confident in our position, and we are ready to implement projects that will demonstrate our commitment to the community,” he added.
Idowu further emphasized the importance of grassroots governance, stating, “The grassroots is the foundation of society, and underestimating this level can lead to significant public wastage.”
He announced plans for outreach programs beginning in January to engage with the community and demonstrate the local government’s readiness to serve.
