LG autonomy: Supreme Court judgement a distraction, says Makinde

Seyi Makinde

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde has said the Supreme Court judgement granting financial autonomy to local governments is a distraction.

In a video released on Saturday, the governor said the real issues facing Nigerians are a lack of productivity, hunger and anger in the land.

Makinde said, “The judgment of the Supreme Court, there is local government autonomy, financial autonomy, and all of that, and I will still say it, I think it’s just a distraction. We must face the real issues that we have.

“The issue that we have is that we are not producing enough. We are not productive.”

Daily Sun reported that the Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that no more payments of local government area allocations would be made to state government accounts and prohibited the governors from receiving, tampering with, or withholding funds meant for local governments.

In his reaction, the Oyo governor said discussions on the judgement would drag on for weeks while the real issues of hunger and anger in the land continue to be neglected.

Makinde castigated the Federal Government over its decision to declare a 150-day duty-free import window for food commodities in a new move to address rising food prices.

“The Federal Government is saying now we have to import food. It’s a big shame. Yes, it’s a big shame on this country,” he said.
