Lawyers Condemn EFCC’s “Illegal” Approach Against Former Kogi Governor

Supreme-Court-Lawyers

In a show of solidarity and condemnation, more than 500 legal practitioners converged at the Supreme Court on Monday to denounce what they termed as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) “illegal” tactics against former Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello.

Led by co-convener S.K Alewu, the group expressed deep concern over the EFCC’s alleged disregard for a valid court order restraining them from arresting Bello. Alewu emphasized that not only did this action breach Bello’s fundamental rights, but it also cast doubt on the integrity of Nigeria’s judiciary.

In a statement issued during the rally, Alewu urged the Judicial Council of Nigeria and President Bola Tinubu to intervene swiftly to halt further abuse and disobedience of court orders by the EFCC.

The lawyers emphasized their commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the independence of the judiciary. They criticized what they described as attempts by “desperate politicians and corrupt elements” to undermine the judicial process and tarnish the reputation of the judiciary.

The focal point of their criticism was the ongoing case involving the EFCC and Governor Yahaya, which they labeled as one of the most egregious instances of such abuse. Despite being served with a valid court order, the EFCC allegedly attempted to arrest the former governor without vacating the restraining order.

The legal practitioners underscored the importance of their collective action in safeguarding the sanctity of court orders and preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s legal system. They vowed to continue their advocacy efforts to ensure that justice is administered impartially and without interference.
