Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani has been named the 17th Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, succeeding his late father, Emir Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, who died after 46 years on the throne.
The Jigawa State Government approved the appointment following recommendations from the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
The Secretary to the State Government, Bala Ibrahim, announced the appointment while addressing journalists in Dutse.
Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani, who previously held the traditional title of Chiroman Gumel, brings both traditional and professional experience to the position. He also served as Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
His emergence follows the death of his father on Thursday, September 3, bringing to an end a 46-year reign that spanned several decades.
Governor Umar Namadi congratulated the new emir and commended the traditional rulers and kingmakers who participated in the selection process.
The new monarch assumes the throne at a time when traditional institutions remain important in maintaining peace, supporting community development and strengthening collaboration between citizens and government.
His appointment also opens a new chapter for the Gumel Emirate following the death of a monarch whose four-and-a-half-decade reign shaped the institution and its people.
