In January 2024, Governor Lawal declared a state of emergency on health, citing the dilapidated state of hospitals and poor healthcare delivery.
This initiative involves rapid renovation, equipping and upgrading of general hospitals, alongside improving healthcare staff salaries to ensure quality service.
To align his rhetoric with action, Governor Lawal quickly began renovating, modernising, upgrading, equipping and building new general hospitals across the state.
Nearly three years on, these Zamfara hitherto decrepit, understaffed and life-threatening health facilities now present a new look, with state-of-the-art facilities, trained and well-remunerated physicians and health workers for effective, safe, people-centred, timely, equitable and integrated service delivery to the people.
Governor Lawal’s performance in primary and secondary healthcare delivery has attracted accolades from stakeholders outside the state.
In December 2025, Governor Lawal was honoured with a $500,000 award for the state’s top performance in primary healthcare (PHC) delivery in the North-West zone during the third edition of the Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge Awards.
The $500,000 prize money was designated to further strengthen and refurbish PHC centres within the state.
