Against the backdrop of persistent religious and communal tensions in parts of the country, the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has described the late Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, as a shining example of true Nigerian values anchored on courage, compassion, and respect for human life.

Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, in a statement at the weekend, said the death of the 92-year-old cleric marked the loss of a moral voice whose actions demonstrated that genuine faith transcends religious and ethnic boundaries.

The association recalled that Imam Abubakar gained national and international recognition in 2018 when he risked his life to protect more than 200 Christians during a violent communal crisis in parts of Plateau State, describing the act as a defining moment of humanity in the face of terror.

Hayab said the late cleric’s conduct reflected the highest ideals of leadership and patriotism, stressing that his life remains a reference point for peaceful co-existence and interfaith harmony in Nigeria.

Quoting Proverbs 10:7, Northern CAN noted that “the memory of the righteous is a blessing,” adding that Imam Abubakar’s name would continue to inspire generations committed to unity and mutual respect.

The association stated that the late Imam’s actions reinforced the belief that authentic religion promotes the sanctity of human life, tolerance, and love for one another, regardless of creed or background.

Northern CAN urged religious leaders across the country to draw lessons from Imam Abubakar’s life by consistently preaching peace, restraint, and compassion, especially in times of tension and uncertainty.

It further called on Nigerians to uphold the values of unity and humanity exemplified by the late cleric, noting that sustainable peace and national healing could only be achieved through collective commitment to peaceful co-existence.

The association, therefore, prayed for comfort for the family of the late Imam and extended its condolences to the Muslim community in Plateau State and across the country.
