LASUSTECH holds maiden research, innovation and development fair

LASUSTECH

The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, Lagos State, has hosted the maiden edition of its Research, Innovation and Development Fair 2025.

Themed “Rebuilding Nigeria’s research and university system in a fast-changing global environment”  the event was held at the 500-seater Agric Auditorium of the institution in Ikorodu. It brought together academics, industry experts, innovators, government representatives and students in a vibrant display of creativity and scientific achievement.

The fair showcased breakthrough research projects, prototypes and technology-driven solutions aimed at addressing national and global challenges. Participants from various faculties presented innovations, ranging from engineering technologies and digital solutions to agricultural advancements, health research and entrepreneurship-driven ideas.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olumuyiwa O. Odusanya, commended participants for their exceptional contributions, noting that the fair marked a significant step in the institution’s mission to drive research excellence and encourage innovation among students and staff. He emphasized that LASUSTECH remains committed to fostering a culture of creativity, industry collaboration and problem-solving.

He also gave insights into why institutional research outcomes have diminished. He emphasized that one of the objectives of the fair was to define what university could do in collaboration with government and industries because in research, they ask questions and try to find a solution; and for research to progress, even as ecosystem is diminishing and the issue of brain drain persists, research needs an enabling environment, power, water, materials and equipment, as well as researchers that can conduct research that can attract national impact.

Prof. Gloria N. Elemo explained how research was foundational to any viable organization and why many institutional research efforts seem to yield little or no outcome and what contributed to the decline.

She explained that it’s lack of vision and focus and the new concept globally is for universities should be interested in market driven research, researches that can make impact and this is what has made developed countries to grow astronomically and one of the ways of achieving this is by organizing this fair, where researchers meet the industrialists for collaborations and policy makers to know areas to emphasize on in policy making.

She also pointed out that the future wealth of the economy is in technology because technology has the keys to employment and wealth creation. Countries must be interested in research and technology and be ready to invest massively in science and technology to aid development.

Highlights of the event included panel discussions, expert-led workshops, product demonstrations and an exhibition tour that attracted policymakers, investors and industry partners. Outstanding innovators were recognised with awards for excellence in research and development.

The successful hosting of the maiden edition reaffirmed LASUSTECH’s position as a rising hub for technological advancement, research impact and sustainable development in Nigeria.

The event was attended by Otunba Francis Meshioye, president, Manufacturing Association of Nigeria, Senator Tokunbo Abiru after going round to view the exhibition displayed applauded the university for their efforts noting that it’s a right step in right direction and a very good approach for collaborations, member of the Nigerian Senate Lagos East Senatorial District,
