The Lagos State Government has officially launched a digital addressing system aimed at improving service delivery, enhancing emergency response, supporting urban planning, and boosting state revenue.

Unveiled yesterday, the initiative known as the Lagos Identifier Programme, will assign unique digital house numbers to all properties in the state, starting with the Ikeja Local Government Area.

The system is expected to commence on July 1, 2025.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Babatunde Olajide, Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, said the digital addressing system will transform how services are delivered across sectors, such as housing, transportation, e-hailing, security, taxation, and urban planning.

“This initiative will not only make Lagos a smarter and more connected city, but it will also have a direct, positive impact on the lives of residents and the government’s ability to respond to their needs,” Olajide said. He added that the project will begin with the enumeration of 23,000 properties in Ikeja. Once completed, the programme will gradually extend to other local councils across the state.

Olajide encouraged property owners, especially those who have subdivided their properties, to come forward for re-identification to ensure they are accurately captured in the new system.

The production and installation of the digital house numbers will be managed by state agencies, in collaboration with a technical partner.

Each property will receive a unique address embedded in a barcode, which residents and officials can scan to access detailed information.

Technical partner, Mr. Yinka Adesiyan, explained that every street and house will have a digital tag containing key data to support a wide range of services.

“This is a revolutionary step towards data-driven governance and efficient service delivery,” Adesiyan noted.

Dr. Olajide expressed optimism that, if successfully implemented, the Lagos Identifier Programme could serve as a model for other Nigerian states.
