The Lagos State Police Command has  interrogated the driver of the Honda Saloon car with license plate: EPE 984 DV that rammed into the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers, while they were discharging their duties along Gbagada Expressway, on Monday morning.

After interrogating the killer driver, the police said  he would be charged in court for manslaughter.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the development to Daily Sun, said, “yes, the driver turned himself in to the police on Monday night. He is presently in our custody and he will be charged for manslaughter.”

The driver was attempting to evade arrest by officers of LASTMA when his vehicle rammed over the innocent sweepers. The driver, after committing the dastardly act, abandoned the vehicle, took to his heels and went into hiding.

A senior police officer at the Pedro Police Station, said: “The driver knew that he had no hiding place because we had already recovered the vehicle he used to crush the sweepers, and we would have been able to trace him with the vehicle’s number plate.

“Anyway, he has surrendered himself to us. I don’t need to tell you where he is kept presently, because he is in our protective custody for now.

“What we are assuring people is that he will be facing the law tomorrow in a competent court of jurisdiction.”

The lifeless bodies of the cleaners were laid in a drainage channel as onlookers mourned the havoc caused by the driver and LASTMA officials. Angry crowd and other street cleaners, on Monday, blocked the road, leaving commuters stranded for hours.

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation had assured members of the public that the outcome of the police investigation would be made public and anyone found culpable would be made to face the consequence of the law.
