The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, has resigned his position.
His resignation is not unconnected with Sunday’s collapse of a seven-storey building in the Lekki area of the state, which claimed lives and several people injured, while many are still feared trapped in the rubbles of the building located at Oba Idowu Oniru Street, Lekki.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, who confirmed Salako’s resignation in a statement, said Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has accepted his resignation.
The statement further noted that the commissioner’s resignation was a prelude to the restructuring of the ministry and its agencies.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the collapsed seven-storey building has risen to six at the time of this report, while rescue operations were still ongoing at the scene of the incident.
Emergency responders at the scene include the Nigerian Police Force, NEMA, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), State Fire Service and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).
Already, the Lagos State government had ordered the arrest of the developer and other professionals working on the seven-floor structure that collapsed under construction. The erstwhile commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Salako, who had visited the site of the collapsed building, disclosed that the developer and professionals violated the planning laws of the state by embarking on the construction without a valid planning permit, as well as ignoring official warnings to halt the building project
