In a proactive move to ensure the state’s sports infrastructure is up to par, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Nasarawa State, Jafaru Ango, undertook a comprehensive inspection of the Lafia City Stadium.

The visit comes in the wake of heavy rainfall that led to localized flooding within the facility, sparking concerns about the stadium’s drainage system and overall preparedness for the upcoming sports season.

Ango, who was accompanied by Isaac Danladi, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, and Yusuf Ahmad, Director of Facilities and Stadium Management, during the inspection left no stone unturned.

Addressing media personnel during the visit on Monday, Ango firmly stated that the reported impact on the playing turf following the rain was unfounded. Contrary to certain media reports, the turf remained unharmed. He emphasized that the primary issue stemmed from debris accumulation obstructing drainage channels due to the torrential downpour.

“Our goal is to ensure that our sports facilities are of the highest standard, capable of hosting top-tier competitions,” Ango declared. He emphasized that unforeseen weather events can challenge even the best drainage systems, but the administration remains committed to addressing such challenges swiftly and effectively.

Engaging with Reform Sports West Africa, the company responsible for the artificial grass on the football pitch, Ango sought solutions to mitigate drainage concerns. Although the drainage system’s construction was contracted to Triacta Nigeria Limited, another company, the Commissioner’s proactive approach to addressing the issue won praise from experts and sports enthusiasts alike.

The inspection also extended to the progress of the artificial turf installation on the Hockey Field, where Reform Sports West Africa demonstrated their commitment to quality workmanship. Ango expressed satisfaction with the advancements, highlighting that investments in sports infrastructure would yield benefits for the entire community.

The Commissioner revealed ambitious plans to enhance the seating terraces at the stadium’s Popular Stands and expand seating capacity to meet established standards. “Our aim is to create a facility that not only accommodates sports enthusiasts but also elevates the sporting experience for everyone,” he explained.

Before concluding the inspection, Sun reports that the Commissioner took time to visit Nasarawa United Football Club players and officials who were in the midst of their training session.
