Committee of Unions in Tertiary Institutions (CUTI), Kwara, has announced a three-day warning strike to protest the state government’s failure to pay workers the approved new national minimum wage.
The strike, scheduled to take place from December 4 to 6, is a response to the government’s inaction on the matter, despite a series of letters and ultimatums sent to the government.
This was contained in a communique issued at the end of an emergency congress of the union on Saturday November 30, at the College of Education, Oro, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara.
The communique was signed by the union’s state Chairman, Musa Mustapha, and Secretary, Haruna Ndagi, respectively.
Prior to the strike, CUTI will lead a peaceful demonstration in all institutions on Tuesday, December 3, to raise awareness about the workers’ plight.
The union also said if the government fails to implement the new national minimum wage with two months arrears by Monday, December 9, the action would continue indefinitely.
CUTI said the strike is a last resort and remains open to negotiations with the state government to resolve the issue amicably.
“These resolutions were considered necessary after series of letters and ultimatums sent to the Kwara State government, including those dated October 4, October 21, and November 7, which urged the government to implement the new Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure and the new national minimum wage,” CUTI said in the communique.
The new minimum wage was approved by President Bola Tinubu on May 18.
