Chelsea suffered a damaging 1-0 defeat to Sunderland on Sunday after Enzo Le Fée’s first-half penalty handed the hosts a valuable Premier League victory at the Stadium of Light.
The defeat dealt another blow to Chelsea’s push for Champions League qualification, with Xabi Alonso’s side failing to find an equaliser despite dominating possession for long spells.
Sunderland, who started the match among the bottom three, took the lead in the 36th minute after Levi Colwill brought down Brian Brobbey inside the penalty area.
Le Fée stepped up and confidently converted the spot-kick to give the hosts an advantage they defended until the final whistle.
Chelsea manager Alonso was unhappy with the decision, insisting that his side should have been awarded a foul on Cole Palmer during the build-up to Sunderland’s penalty.
The Blues struggled to turn their possession into clear scoring opportunities as Sunderland maintained a disciplined defensive shape and frustrated the visitors.
Alonso introduced Estêvão at half-time in an attempt to change the direction of the match. However, Chelsea could not break through Sunderland’s defence, with further substitutions failing to produce the desired response.
The result marked Chelsea’s fourth Premier League defeat in 10 matches under Alonso, who joined the club after his spell at Real Madrid. The London side remain fifth in the table on 16 points, while Sunderland moved to 18th with eight points.
For Sunderland, the victory provided a significant boost in their fight to move away from the relegation zone. It was only their second league win of the season.
