To transform its energy landscape, the Katsina State Government has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ocean Solution Energie, a France-based renewable energy company renowned for its innovative projects across Africa.
The MoU was signed at the weekend in Paris, France, by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Power and Energy, Dr. Hafiz Ibrahim Ahmed, following robust engagements with development partners and industry experts.
The collaboration, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, highlights the state government’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge solutions to address its energy needs sustainably.
Ocean Solution Energie, represented by its Chairman, Mr. Minkaila Salami, expressed optimism about the partnership. “We share a vision with the Katsina State Government to advance renewable energy solutions, supporting Nigeria’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 and expanding access to sustainable electricity,” Mr. Salami said.
As a testament to the shared vision, Governor Radda announced plans to develop a mini-hydroelectric power station as part of a pilot project. The initiative aims to harness the immense potential of Katsina’s water resources to generate clean, reliable energy for underserved communities.
“The initiative will focus on providing reliable, renewable energy to local communities and will serve as a model for future hydroelectric developments across the State’s 43 dams,” the Governor noted. Highlighting the government’s dedication to ensuring the project’s success.
“Katsina State Government is committed to providing financial support to ensure the successful installation and long-term sustainability of the power station.”
The pilot project, to be located at Danja Dam, is designed to supply energy to critical infrastructure, including irrigation systems, a water treatment plant, small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), and households. It will serve as a blueprint for scaling similar projects across the state, unlocking opportunities for socio-economic development and environmental sustainability.
The partnership aligns seamlessly with Nigeria’s Electricity Act of 2023, which advocates for decentralised energy generation and the integration of renewable sources into the national grid. By promoting renewable energy, the project also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, which emphasizes affordable and clean energy access for all.
Moreover, the initiative reflects Katsina State’s resolve to address pressing energy challenges while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change. By prioritizing renewable energy solutions, the government is setting a precedent for innovative, sustainable development in Nigeria.
