From Fred Ezeh, Abuja
Before December 2022, 52-year-old Mrs. Amaka Mary Animba, a mother of five, was a happy woman, easy going and full of life. She was known for her enterprising spirit, and dedication to her children.
She was running a successful business in kitchen and household wares in Lokoja, Kogi State. But all these were rudely disrupted as she now battles to stay alive since she was diagnosed of kidney failure at advanced stage (Chronic Kidney Disease)
Ever since, the family has been battling to save her life, a mission that has drained her investments, savings and family resources as she has to undergo haemodialysis three times in a week with each session costing at least N35,000, in addition to blood forming injections and other medications, which according to the report from Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja cost about N90,000 monthly.
However, her son, Emeka Animba, said the family spends between N450,000 to N500,000 on medications and other hospital bills every month.
At the Federal Teaching Hospital, Kogi State, previously known as Federal Medical Center Lokoja, Mrs. Animba, who could barely talk, said she has resigned to fate, having exhausted all the money the family and friends donated, and now passionately appealing to Nigerians to come to her aid.
Emeka, while narrating the harrowing experience the family has been facing since his mother’s medical ordeal, said all the efforts the family has made to raise more funds for the transplant have been unsuccessful, having spent between N6m and N8m on medical expenses.
According to him, since the FMC Lokoja has no facility for the kidney transplant, they are now looking to go elsewhere to perform the transplant but the impediment is the lack of finance.
Meanwhile, report from the hospital on Mrs. Animba’s condition gave the current estimate of Kidney transplant to be around N18 million.
Emeka, his siblings and father have, therefore, resorted to prayers and appealing to well-meaning Nigerians to come to their aid and help their mother stay alive. They also provided an account details of the family, soliciting the financial support of kind-hearted persons to enable the family carry out the kidney transplant.
