Kebbi State governor, Dr. Nasir Idris has disclosed that only his state in Nigeria offers free education and scholarships to students studying within the country and foreign tertiary institutions.

Idris stated this while hosting the SSA to the President on Students Matters, Sunday Asefon, who led the National President of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Olusola Oladejo, during their courtesy visit to the governor at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi.

They came to inaugurate the newly elected executives of the Kebbi State National Students Association. While addressing the visitors, the governor informed them that he had paid about N2.7 billion for tuition fees of both the students studying within Nigeria and in foreign countries.

He said: “It is only Kebbi State that offers total free education in Nigeria. We pay tuitions fees of all our pupils up to secondary and tertiary institutions. Recently, I paid N2.7 billion tuition fees for students studying across tertiary institutions within and outside Nigeria.  We offer total scholarship to our students. We are doing this to remove the stress, burden from the parents.

“Some parents could have more than three children in tertiary institutions. If the money is too much, some parents might not be able to shoulder the school fees, especially this period that many tertiary institutions have increased their tuition fees. That is why we are shouldering the free education, scholarship to all our students.”

Idris disclosed that his administration has increased the feeding money to pupils across the schools from N150m to N300 million, stressed that he has also lifted embargo on employment, and employed about 5,000 teachers.
