From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has noted that he would do all in his power to protect the people of the state, insisting that no amount of money is too much to safeguard lives and property.
Idris stated this while inspecting the pre-passing-out parade of the first batch of 500 vigilantes and hunters trained on weapons handling and combat tactics to complement the operations of conventional forces at the training camp in Kalgo, near Birnin Kebbi.
They are part of the 3,000 local vigilantes and hunters recruited by the government on the approval of Governor Nasir Idris to reinforce the security apparatus of the state.
While addressing the volunteers, Idris reaffirmed the policy thrust of his administration to invest enormous resources in security.
According to him, “I will spend whatever it takes to protect the lives and property of our people. Security matters are priceless in my estimation; no cost is too much.
“My administration decided to recruit vigilantes and hunters to work side by side with conventional forces to swell up the personnel in combat operations against bandits, criminals and criminality.
“I’m here in person to see your talents after the completion of your training, which I admire and commend. Everyone who has been enlisted will start to enjoy monthly salary and allowances; on completion of the training, you’ll be deployed to your localities to engage in security surveillance and field operations.

“The government shall continue to assist our conventional security services with financial and material support for optimal performance, to enable the people sleep with their two eyes closed.
“I’ve sanctioned that the training should be conducted in phases of 500 trainees at a time, to avoid overstretching the training camp and facilities,” Governor Idris said.
The governor also donated N30 million to the participants and instructors.
In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Colonel (rtd) Danladi Hassan Ribah, informed the governor that the vigilantes and hunters were trained by the DSS, the Police, the Civil Defence and the Army Legion.
“The trainees were inducted on human rights in the implementation of law, drill, weapons handling, signal and combat tactics.
“We’re sincerely grateful to Governor Nasir Idris for his approval to recruit 3,000 vigilantes and hunters to be co-opted into the security architecture of the state, as well as approving the commencement of training for 500 recruits, enjoying full monthly salary,” Col. Ribah said.
