The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has expressed excitement over the impressive numbers of youth aspirants, vying for Chairmanships and Councillorship positions and urged political parties in Kebbi state to allow them to emerge as candidates ahead of the August 31,2024 local government council election .

Chairman of the Council in Kebbi State, Engr. Ahmed Rufai Abubakar stated this in a statement made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi.

According to him, ” I am pleased with the number of youths aspiring for chairmanship and councilorship positions in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for August 31st ,2024.

” The serving caretakers are primarily young, and about 80% of the political parties aspirants are young. So, it shows that the young people in Kebbi State are ready for leadership, considering the excellent performance we have seen from some youths over the years. I am appealing to the political parties to ensure a transparent process for the capable young people among the aspirants to emerge.

“I want to commend the State Independent Electoral Commission(KESIEC) for its determination to conduct a free and fair election. From the initial stage, it has been consulting with various stakeholders to ensure everyone is involved in a smooth, credible election. The security institutions should support KESIEC to ensure a peaceful and well-coordinated election in the state.

“The Kebbi state Governor, His Excellency, Dr Nasir Idris, has vowed not to interfere in the LGA elections. I believe him, considering his known position as a democrat and a Labour leader. And I believe his statement is in tune with his administration’s performance in infrastructure, education, and youth development. So, it’s left for the candidates and political parties to convince the electorates why they should vote, as there would be no shortcut to victory.

“I further urge our youth to adhere strictly to campaign and election regulations. They shouldn’t be used as a tool to cause unrest in the state because Kebbi state has always been known to be peaceful, so we, the youths, shouldn’t be used to distort that. We should continue to be peace ambassadors of our various communities. However, they should be vigilant and prevent anyone from trying to manoeuvre the electoral process”, he said.
