From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi
The Kebbi State Government has handed over the renovated Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit of Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, to the hospital management for effective service delivery.
Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Ismaila Yakubu Augie, during the handover ceremony, said the rehabilitation reflected Governor Nasir Idris’ commitment to improving healthcare delivery across the state.
Augie said the A&E unit had undergone a significant transformation compared to its previous condition. He described the development as part of the government’s sustained investment in the health sector.
“We thank the governor for his continued support and commitment to the health sector, which remains one of the priority areas of this administration.
“The facility was previously in a deplorable state, but today it has been transformed into a modern and functional unit for the benefit of the people,” he said.
Augie urged health workers and stakeholders to ensure proper maintenance and judicious utilisation of the facility.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Shehu Nuhu-Koko, appreciated the state government for revitalising the unit.
According to him, the hospital now enjoys uninterrupted water supply and improved electricity to enhance healthcare services and emergency response.
“We are sincerely grateful to the Kebbi State Government for revitalising this hospital unit,” he said.
In a related development, the commissioner also handed over the renovated morgue at Kebbi State Teaching Hospital (KSTH), Kalgo, to the hospital management.
Augie explained that the decision to renovate the morgue followed Governor Idris’ inspection visit, during which he observed the poor state of the facility.
He added that on-going medical and health-related courses at Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology necessitated the upgrade of facilities at the teaching hospital to meet required standards.
The commissioner disclosed that the renovated morgue now has six compartments and uninterrupted electricity supply powered by both Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and a solar energy system.
