The Sandamu Local Government Area of Katsina State says it targets 165, 000 animals for vaccination in the ongoing 2017 livestock vaccination in the area.
Alhaji Usman Ahmed, the Director of Agriculture in the council, made the disclosure in an interview, in Sandamu.
He said the total number of the livestock to be vaccinated comprised of 55,000 cows and 110,000 smaller animals like goats, sheep and rams.
The director further said the vaccination was an annual event aimed at preventing the animals from the common animal diseases as well as encourage consumption of hygienic meat and milk.
Ahmed said that the exercise which commenced three days ago, would last for 30 days across the three districts of Sandamu, Fago and Rijiyar Tsamiya in the area.
He said his department had received the delivery of enough vaccines and engaged the services of trained veterinary vaccinators for the exercise.
The director commended the state government for the exercise and called on herdsmen to avail their livestock of the advantage of the exercise, stressing that it was free of charge.
He, however, cautioned farmers against trespassing or encroaching grazing lands, stressing that ‘’this leads to unnecessary but preventable clashes between farmers and the herdsmen.’’
The director lauded the efforts of the state government and security agencies in curtailing drastically the instances of cattle rustling in some parts of the state. (NAN)
