From Desmond Mgboh, Kano
Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Kano State shut down the headquarters of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and the office of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Monday.
The unionists were protesting the recent hike in electricity tariffs by KEDCO. They stood at the entrance of both offices, chanting solidarity songs and preventing workers from resuming their duties.
Mubarak Buba Yarima, the Chairperson of the TUC, accused the federal government of burdening Nigerians with the increased tariff. He demanded its immediate reversal, stating that the union would not reopen the offices until their demands were met.
The protest was peaceful, with no reports of violence or disruption of public order.
