Kano State Concerned Citizens Initiative (KCCI) has canvassed for a violent-free supplementary election in the state on Saturday.
The initiative led by distinguished elders from various walks of life among them former presidential candidate of the National Republican Convention (NRC), Alhaji Bashir Tofa, who said that Kano State could not afford to witness a violent poll.
Speaking on Monday on behalf of the elders, Alhaji Tofa said: “We are anxious, concerned, disturbed and troubled by the seeming discord and agitated impatience manifesting in Kano since the collation of the March 9 governorship and state House of Assembly elections results.”
He revealed that they were also worried by the declaration by INEC that the outcome of the governorship poll was inconclusive.
They urged INEC to do everything in its powers to rectify as well as attend to all the perceived challenges which characterised the two elections
“We strongly plead that all the elected officials must be told in no uncertain terms to live above board and that anyone found wanting must receive the maximum sanction provided by the Electoral Act and the constitution,” they said.
“It is also very necessary to plead with all the arms of our security architecture to remain at alert from now on until the formal declaration of the re-run election,” he stated, adding that sufficient personnel must be deployed to the each of the 234 polling units where the exercise would hold.”
While applauding the security agencies for an excellent job during the previous polls, they urged them to go ahead and complete their impressive performance by being above board and completely nonpartisan during the conduct of the supplementary poll.
They also appealed with the security agencies to take steps to prevent people from neighbouring states, who are non-residents of Kano, from coming to partake in the polls to forestall unnecessary tension and violence.
