June 12: Sen Okpebholo Calls for Unity to Defend Edo

From Tony Osauzo, Benin

The Edo State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on the people of the state to unite in defence of their state against bad governance.

Senator Okpebholo in a statement to commemorate Democracy Day, highlighted the symbolic significance of June 12, a day when Nigeria spoke out in defiance of tribal and religious divides to embrace democratic freedom.

“Our state feels more unstable and more dangerous than it has in a very long time,” he remarked, expressing deep concern over the escalating political tension and misinformation permeating social media.

He also condemned the “continued assault on democratic, traditional, and other norms” that has exacerbated the state’s instability and called for a change.

Senator Okpebholo criticized the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for its failure to deliver on promises and for its recent efforts to cling to power despite widespread dissatisfaction.

Addressing the despair felt by many in the state, Okpebholo acknowledged the difficulty of remaining hopeful under the current circumstances but emphasized the importance of seizing the moment to initiate change.

He therefore called for collective action to support ongoing rescue efforts and assist those affected by recent natural disasters, such as floods that have devastated families and homes.

“The reckless actions of the PDP government are a moral reckoning on all of us,” he declared, adding “We cannot sit idly and watch the opportunities of our youths wasted by those you have entrusted with your votes.”

He urged the people of Edo State to unite and contribute to the movement for positive change, stressing that “A New Edo is Rising!”
