President Bola Tinubu has hailed the delivery of the long‑awaited Opebi–Mende–Ojota link road and bridges in Lagos by Julius Berger, describing it as a critical infrastructure milestone set to ease traffic congestion and boost connectivity across Lagos. The project, completed by the construction giant, is expected to significantly cut travel time for commuters while enhancing economic activities in the axis, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s transport network and urban mobility.
The Ojota–Opebi link bridge was commissioned in a ceremony marked by pomp and pageantry, as part of President Bola Tinubu’s two-day visit to Lagos, during which several flagship projects by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu were unveiled. Represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu described the project as emblematic of purposeful governance, noting that such developments are “not just physical structures, but symbols of purpose… that must be seen, felt, and experienced by the people.”
Highlighting its impact, Tinubu said: “The Ojota–Opebi link Bridge is more than a road; it is a bridge of opportunity. In a city like Lagos, movement is everything. When traffic improves, productivity increases, lives improve.”
He added that the project sends “a clear message that Lagos will not be overwhelmed by the challenges of growth.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the project as technically demanding, citing swampy, flood-prone terrain that required advanced engineering solutions.
“What you see… is the result of careful planning and the application of advanced solutions,” he said.

He praised Julius Berger for “keeping to time, staying within budget, and delivering high-quality road infrastructure,” adding that the design incorporates walkways, bicycle lanes, solar lighting, and service ducts, reflecting a forward-looking vision.
He also noted the integration of a comprehensive stormwater management system to tackle flooding along the Udo-Yarlaro corridor, boosting environmental resilience.
Julius Berger’s Managing Director, Dr. Peer Lubasch, described the project as a major step in easing congestion and strengthening Lagos’ economy. He credited Tinubu’s foresight, calling it “your baby,” conceived during his tenure as governor, and praised Sanwo-Olu’s resilience in delivering the long-standing vision despite global challenges.
Lubasch reaffirmed the company’s legacy, noting its 60-year track record of delivering critical infrastructure with “reliability, utmost integrity, and professionalism,” while expressing readiness for future landmark projects.
Stretching about 5.04 kilometres, the Opebi–Mende link road connects Ikeja, Maryland and Ojota, offering an alternative to congested routes like Allen Avenue, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, and Ikorodu Road. Built with multiple bridges, dual carriageways, walkways, and upgraded drainage, the project enhances mobility, safety, and flood control.
Despite difficult soil conditions, including deep peat layers, Julius Berger deployed advanced techniques such as long-span bridges, reinforced ramps and deep foundation systems to successfully deliver the complex infrastructure.
