The Cross River State Police Command on Tuesday morning foiled a mob justice by rescuing a man from a violent mob at Harbour Junction, Calabar, after he was accused of stealing mobile phones.
The suspect, identified as Chukwu Ebuka, was found by police operatives with multiple injuries after members of the public allegedly descended on him. He is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed clinic.
According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. on September 1, 2026, following a distress call received by the Command.
“Acting promptly on the distress call, a police patrol team was immediately deployed to the scene, where operatives found one Chukwu Ebuka, male, being attacked by a mob.
“The team intervened, rescued him and evacuated him to an undisclosed clinic where he is currently receiving treatment for multiple injuries sustained during the attack,” the statement said.
In connection with the incident, police also arrested one Azubike Michael, 56, for allegedly instigating the mob and encouraging members of the public to carry out jungle justice on the suspect.
“He is currently in police custody, while the Command investigates the circumstances surrounding the incident and the allegations that led to the mob attack,” ASP Akata added.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, prevention of crime, and maintenance of public order.
He cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that persons suspected of committing offences should be handed over to the police for investigation rather than subjected to mob violence.
The Police Command said further developments would be communicated to the public as investigations progressed.
