Judge remands Kanu’s brother, lawyer, 10 others in Kuje prison

An Abuja magistrate’s court in Kuje (FCT) has remanded Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the brother of leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and 10 others in Kuje prison.

This was after they were charged by the police for their participation in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest on Monday in Abuja. The duo, were arrested by the police for inciting disturbance and breach of public peace, in disobedience to a court order.

The prosecution accused them of denying other citizens freedom of movement, disrupting free flow of traffic while chanting war songs and requesting for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

Among those detained are: Kanu’s lead lawyer, Ejimakor, Emmanuel Kanu (alias Fine Boy) and Barrister Okere. The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest was organised to demand the immediate release of Kanu, who has been in prolonged detention despite several court rulings ordering his release.

The Federal High Court had stopped the planned protest by Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, and others for the release of detained leader of IPOB, in some areas of Abuja, including the Aso Rock Villa, on Monday.

Justice Mohammed Umar of the Abuja division of the court, also restrained the protesters from any where close to the villa, National Assembly, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square and Shehu Shagari Way, pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

The court  granted the ex-parte motion moved by the police lawyer, Wisdom Madaki, on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN), contrary to the earlier media reports in circulation.

The judge also made an order of abridgement of time “within which the respondents will respond to the application on notice to cause the ex-parte order be set aside on Monday, October 20, 2025 at 9.00am.”
