Jonathan’s 2027 bid will shake Nigeria’s political space — Agbedi

A member of the House of Representatives, Fred Agbedi, has said a possible presidential bid by former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 general elections would significantly alter Nigeria’s political landscape.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Agbedi claimed that Jonathan would contest the presidency under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the former president as a stronger and more experienced politician than he was during his previous time in office.

According to the lawmaker, Jonathan’s entry into the race would have far-reaching implications for the political atmosphere across the country.

“It means so much, and it will upset the entire political atmosphere. He is more prepared better for the job,” Agbedi said.

He argued that Jonathan still possesses considerable national political influence despite leaving office in 2015, adding that his return could reshape alignments ahead of the election.

Agbedi also weighed in on the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in electoral matters, insisting that the interpretation of election laws remains the responsibility of the courts.

“It’s the court that will interpret it, not INEC. INEC does not have the power to say yes or no to what the court says,” he stated.

The comments come amid increasing speculation over the political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with discussions growing around possible alliances, defections and the return of influential political figures.
