… Beggi, Nweke unable to lift Nigeria

The Junior D’Tigress suffered a second successive loss in the FIBA Under 19 Women’s World Cup yesterday in Czech Republic.

Despite strong performances from Idumagbo Beggi (17pts) and Toby Nweke (16pts), the Nigerian team slumped 61-79 to their Portuguese counterparts in the game played at the Sportovní hala Vodova, Brno.

The loss follows Monday’s collapse by the Tigress 42-113 against their Canadian opponents.

With one- one win against China and the two setbacks, Nigeria finished 3rd in their Group B campaign.

Avoiding a clash with defending champion, USA, in the round of 16, Nigeria will now face runners-up from Group A where three teams, Hungary, Israel and Korea Republic are battling for the spot.

The Coach Juliana Negedu’s Nigerian ladies will play their round of 16 match today, with a potential quarterfinal matchup against either Canada or Brazil on the horizon.
