Jerry Eze and power of positive modelling

Pastor Jerry Uchechukwu Eze, the founder and Lead Pastor of Streams of Joy International Church, is worth understudying by the younger generation. He was raised by a single mother who influenced him with godly virtues. His experience is akin to the Biblical Timothy, whose grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice, imbued with genuine faith in God, early in life. Similarly, in the secular world, Ben Carson was brought up by a single mother, Mrs. Sonya Carson. She shaped his worldview and helped him achieve his dream of becoming a world-class neurosurgeon. Ben would later perform the first successful separation of twins conjoined at the back of the head. And for Jerry, one of his earliest ministerial footprints is authorship of the book, Supernatural Parenting to teach parents the mode of spiritual coverage for their children.

Although Jerry had honed his priesthood calling at the All-Saints Chapel of Abia State University, Uturu, during his undergraduate days, his raw guts and can-do spirit became manifest when, against the odds of high cost and riot of nature, he successfully sand-filled a stretch of the swampy shores of Ehimmiri stream in Umuahia, along the Road that leads to Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. That is where he erected the magnificent, fully air-conditioned, and tastefully-finished auditorium, and started the Streams of Joy in 2013.  Today, the little beginning has paid off and transformed into a real time global church.

But beyond the edifice, the eccentricity of Jerry’s designer wears, his impeccable Queen’s English, his short but impactful chains of Sunday services, the courteous reception given to first-timers by a well-polished protocol team, as well as the church’s uniquely-packaged programmes, stood the church out. The entire modus operandi of the church is a shift from the status quo. Jerry brought fresh air of social grace and creativity to the style of worship in the religious city of Umuahia.  And as bees swarm near their hives, the youths who are weary of uninspiring conservative methods, found his innovative style very inviting and uplifting. It is therefore unsurprising that his church is largely peopled by youngsters and the young at heart.

Jerry confessed that he grew up in poverty. And it was the cross of poverty that led him to pursue God very closely. He had a choice of taking the shortcut of criminality but he remained consistent to the path of his destiny. Pastor Jerry mastered the art of timing. He did not circumvent the silent years of preparation; rather, he understood clearly that “You cannot carry the destiny of a time bomb and explode like a knockout.” Hence, he prayed, worked, persevered, and stayed through for a divine turnaround.  During an interview in 2021, he said that, “I am a man of prayer: I make bold to say this; over the past 13 years of my life, there is no night that I slept all through the night. I have midnight prayers all through the morning over the past 13 years of my life…My secret place is what determines the amount of impact people are seeing.” Little wonder, his public intercessory ministry that is accompanied by outstanding testimonies is not just a fluke. He has been salted by God through nights of ‘Gethsemane’ encounters and spiritual warfare, typical of Zion that brings forth her children after travailing.

Indeed, Jerry’s spiritual sensitivity and looking out for the hurting souls led to the fulfillment of what God had told him that, “A time is going to come when I would shift the trajectory of your ministry.” His digital prayer movement, New Season Prophetic Prayers and Declarations (NSPPD) was not the in-thing before the COVID-19 lockdown. It was a child of necessity. He stated that, “NSPPD wasn’t intentional about putting the crusade on the social media… It wasn’t like God told me to use the platform…”  However, in response to COVID-19-induced fear and deaths, alongside his wife, they started sharing Psalms 91 in online prayers and people who were infected with COVID-19 virus got healed, and other miracles took place in quick successions. That was how NSPPD got a life of its own through multimedia empires to reach and connect millions of people across the globe. Its perfect pitch is the powerful slogan, “What God cannot do doesn’t exist.”

In September 2025, Jerry reportedly maintained the record of highest-earning youtuber in Nigeria in two consecutive years with a near-three million subscriber base and views surpassing 643 million from across the 16 branches of the church in the US, the UK, Canada, South Africa, and Nigeria. His earnings are calculated in billions of naira. Indeed, Jerry’s story is hinged on the axiom of following one’s passion by giving room for serendipity. His compassion for dying souls and those held down by battles of life opened a vista of endless opportunity for him in the digital space. While nations, corporate organizations, and individuals were bemoaning the fate of COVID-19, it inadvertently ushered floodgates of networking, impact, visibility, and wealth creation for the likes of Jerry Eze.  Contrariwise, SKYPE lost its dominance in video-conferencing to ZOOM during the pandemic. The new normal brought a shift in thinking, strategy, and operational balance.

Today, the 43-year-old Pastor Jerry is a man of immense influence. He has built houses for widows and empowered hundreds of young entrepreneurs. Socialites and political leaders hobnob with him in deference to God’s glory in his life. His darling wife, Eno has also received some government appointments. The sphere of influence has really expanded. That is the power of context. I am glad that the structures he built around himself would help him escape the inevitable landmines that come with success. There should be no lowering of guards now that the flank of the family is further exposed. Nonetheless, Jerry Eze’s story is an indication that when a child washes his hands, he dines with the elders. In this case, staying put to one’s calling, passion, and pursuit of excellence through hard work, is a direct recruitment to the top.
