Japan: Yokohama teenage suicide leads to two deaths

A 17-year-old high school student leapt from a shopping centre in Yokohama, Japan, causing the death of a 32-year-old pedestrian who was below.

The incident occurred in a busy retail area on Saturday night. After being taken to the hospital at approximately 6 p.m. local time, both victims died from their wounds shortly after.

September 1st is statistically the day with the greatest suicide rate among Japanese youth, frequently attributed to worries surrounding the start of the new school term; however, the reason for the student’s acts is still unknown. 513 children in Japan committed suicide in 2022, with “school issues” being the most commonly mentioned cause.

According to a Ministry of Education survey, students who refuse to attend school, known as “futoko,” often face challenges related to family, social interactions, and bullying. Authorities and media outlets have increased efforts to raise awareness about these issues, particularly around the beginning of the school year.

The incident is similar to another tragedy that occurred in 2020 in Osaka, where a female student died as a result of a teenage boy’s suicide. Japan is the only G7 country where teen suicide is the top cause of death, despite the country’s overall dropping suicide rate. Suicide among young people is still a serious problem.
