The Registrar of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Dr. Donald Ofili, has called on laboratory practitioners to prioritize the healthcare needs of Nigerians, despite temptations to seek opportunities abroad. He made this appeal during the maiden induction and oath-taking ceremony for medical laboratory science graduates of Osun State University, Osogbo, yesterday.

Represented by Dr. Akinwale Akinlabi, Director of Health Laboratory Planning, Research, and Statistics, Ofili emphasized the importance of adhering to professional training and ethics. He stated that MLSCN will continue to collaborate with training institutions and stakeholders to maintain high standards in the education of future medical laboratory scientists.

“Our fellow citizens are now more aware of the quality of healthcare available internationally. We must not blame our shortcomings on the very system we created. Instead, we should focus on transformative changes that enhance patient care and improve diagnostic outcomes,” Ofili said.

He urged the new inductees to commit to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing that the health sector requires their expertise to meet the needs of the population. “Although you may be tempted by the get-rich-quick syndrome, or the search for greener pastures overseas, remember the health sector needs your expertise to meet the yearnings of your fellow citizens,” Ofili added.

In his address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Odunayo Adebooye reminded the graduates that their work could have life-saving implications. He encouraged them to conduct thorough investigations, maintain ethical standards, and uphold professionalism in their future endeavors.

Dr. Yekeen Kosamat, Head of the Medical Laboratory Science Department at Uniosun, revealed that out of 64 students who began the program, only 37 completed their training, with two graduating with First Class Honors, 29 with Second Class Upper Honors, and six with Second Class Lower Honors. He urged the new inductees to uphold integrity, accuracy, and empathy in their work, stating, “Every test result you sign carries not just ink, but a life’s destiny.”

Kosamat also highlighted the evolving landscape of laboratory medicine, encouraging graduates to remain curious, embrace innovation, and stay updated on advancements in molecular techniques, automation, genomics, and artificial intelligence.
