As Nigeria joins the global community in celebrating International Youth Day 2025, the head, Due Process and Public Procurement Bureau in Abia State, Dr. Oluebube A. Chukwu, has called for urgent policy action to prioritize youth welfare in Nigeria, stressing that the moment must go beyond ceremony.
Dr. Chukwu, who spoke with newsmen during the 2025 International Youth Day commemoration, urged young people to remain resilient and continue driving positive change in their communities.
He further charged Nigerian youth to remain focused, courageous and committed to excellence.
Chukwu described this year’s theme, “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,” as apt. He underscored the vital role of young people in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through grassroots innovation and engagement.
He described the Nigerian youth population—estimated at over 90 million—as the country’s greatest asset and emphasized that strategic investment in their education, healthcare, mental well-being and economic empowerment is non-negotiable.
“Our youth must not merely survive—they must thrive. Government and stakeholders must move beyond tokenism to implement tangible, measurable reforms that place young people at the center of development,” he said.
Highlighting the significance of community-based action, Dr. Chukwu lauded youth-led efforts across the country that are translating SDG goals into real-world impact—from climate resilience to education and employment.

Dr. Chukwu further implored youth to leverage on Abia State Governor Alex Otti’s youth-based programmes like Tech rise and Abia Leadership Academy, among others, to actualize their dreams.
These, he said, are proof that Nigerian youth can turn adversity into opportunity when supported with the right tools and platforms.
While acknowledging persistent challenges such as unemployment, inequality and inadequate infrastructure, Dr. Chukwu encouraged Nigerian youth not to lose hope.
“Do not be daunted. Your creativity, determination and passion are the foundation of a better Nigeria,” he enjoined young people on the occasion.
Dr. Chukwu advocated for several practical steps to harness youth potential to include: establishing youth councils and advisory platforms at local and state levels; supporting youth-led policy dialogues and governance initiatives; expanding access to digital skills training, green economy programmes; entrepreneurship funding and mentorship opportunities through partnerships with government, civil society and the private sector.
“It’s time to match words with action. Prioritising youth welfare is not just a moral duty—it is a strategic imperative for our nation’s future,” he maintained, calling on young people: “Be bold. Stay resilient. Strive to be your best. And continue building change from the ground up.”
