ITTF Africa Youth Cup: Muiz Adegoke, Wassim, Sebatindira advance to finals after thrilling wins

Nigeria’s Adegoke Muiz has secured a place in the finals of the ITTF Africa Youth Championships after a hard-fought semifinal victory over Algeria’s Bella Maheidine.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament is taking place at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos. In a thrilling contest, both players showcased exceptional skill and determination.

But Muiz’s precise shots and tactical play proved decisive as he outclassed Maheidine in five straight games: 4-1 (11-9, 11-9, 12-10, 11-5, 11-5). The win marks a major milestone for Muiz, highlighting his rising profile in the sport. The crowd watched in suspense as the two young stars battled for supremacy.

With this victory, Muiz advances to the final, where he is set to face a yet-to-be-named opponent in what promises to be an exciting showdown.  In the U-19 boys singles semifinal, Tunisia’s Essid Wassim beat Egypt’s Omar Ehab, in a straight set win 4-2 (15-13, 7-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9, 11-6) to advance to finals.

Wassim has participated in several international table tennis events, showcasing his skills against top players. He has demonstrated a strong competitive spirit, often pushing his opponents to their limits in high-stakes matches. Uganda’s Joseph Sebatindira defeated Algeria’s Bilel Zouitene in a narrow win 3-2 (11-9, 6-11,12-10, 8-11, 12-10) in the U-15 boys singles semifinal to advance to the finals.

The 10-year-old Ugandan table tennis prodigy, who’s making waves globally, is currently ranked first in the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Under-11 World Rankings with 265 ranking points.

He has won several prestigious titles, including the World Table Tennis Championship in Egypt, the WTT Youth Contender Championship in Berlin, and the Africa Hopes Challenge U-12 in Lagos, Nigeria.

He is known for his refined arm reach and powerful forehand attacks, making him a formidable opponent on the table tennis court.

Sebatindira’s achievements have brought attention to Ugandan table tennis, with many considering him a key figure in elevating the sport’s global profile.

His dedication, skill, and determination have earned him recognition as one of the brightest young talents in table tennis.

The tournament is expected to boost the growth of the sport on the continent and inspire the next generation of table tennis stars.
