It’s fake news – NAFDAC says FG didn’t order lifting of sachet alcohol ban

Sachet alcohol

By John Ogunsemore

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has debunked a report claiming the Federal Government has ordered the agency to suspend its ban on sale of sachet alcohol.

The report had gone viral in a section of the media on Wednesday morning.

The report said NAFDAC had been ordered to suspend all enforcement actions relating to the proposed ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle alcoholic products.

It claimed the Federal Government’s directive to NAFDAC was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Terrence Kuanum.

Kuanum said the order followed a joint intervention by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser, which raised concerns over the security implications of continued enforcement in the absence of a fully implemented National Alcohol Policy.

But in an X post hours after the report went viral, NAFDAC called it untrue.

Quoting the report, the agency said, “FAKE NEWS. The Ban Stays!”
