“Thank you for your understanding and cooperation,” the United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria also said. It had, in a security alert on March 3, warned the United States citizens of potential demonstrations in Abuja.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs the US citizens that there is a high potential for protests in Abuja tomorrow, March 4, due to the current conflict with Iran. Previous protests by some groups have resulted in violent clashes between the group and Nigerian security forces. The Embassy recommends that all US citizens in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday, March 4,” the security alert read.
It directed its nationals in Nigeria to avoid areas where protests are taking place, avoid crowds, exercise caution in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests, monitor local media for updates, be aware of their surroundings and keep a low profile.
Other directives were that the United States citizens should review personal security plans and keep cell phone charged in case of emergency, carry proper identification, stay alert, including at shopping centres, movie theatres and places of worship, familiarise themselves with emergency exits and egresses when they enter buildings and vary travel routes and times to reduce predictability.
“The Consular sections of the Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos remain open. Please monitor our website for updates,” it further directed.
