The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), European Union (EU) and the United States (US) to intervene in the detention of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, citing multiple court rulings and UN opinions ordering his release.
In a statement, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, urged the international community to pressure Nigeria to comply with the UN Working Group Opinion No. 25/2022, the 2022 Nigerian Court of Appeal judgment, and the Federal High Court Umuahia ruling, emphasising that Kanu’s detention is arbitrary and unlawful.
The group also demanded robust consular and diplomatic intervention from the British Government, given Kanu’s British citizenship and called on British parliamentarians, human rights organizations, faith leaders, and the global Igbo diaspora to amplify calls for justice.
“Britain cannot publicly celebrate the freedom of one activist as a ‘top priority’ while offering mere statements for another British citizen whose detention has been ruled arbitrary and unlawful by the UN and multiple courts,” Powerful stated, stressing that justice must be equal and transparent.
