From Okey Sampson, Umuahia
The Vice Chancellor of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Prof Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe has said that investing in women remains the most valuable asset to have.
Prof Iwe stated this at the University’s auditorium during the institution’s celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day and award-giving ceremony, organized by Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike Women Association (MOUAUWA).
The MOUAU’s VC who said the theme of the 2024 IWD Celebration, “Investing in Women: Key to all-round Progress -Women Inclusiveness”, was apt, noted that some nations of the world lack progress in key sectors because women are denied necessary attention.
“Women have been so endowed with virtues that the menfolk could hardly deny. The time is ripe to prioritize the space created, attention given and value placed on women if the society must move forward.
“Inclusiveness rather than antagonism should be encouraged among the women. Learn to identify the potentials in others and help them come to the limelight by introducing, recommending, supporting and mentoring them at different levels.”
Prof Iwe who said under his watch MOUAUWA would continue to enjoy the support of the management of the institution, promised to give the women 100 per cent support in the renovation of their Day Care Centre.
The wife of the VC and president of MOUAUWA, Dr. (Mrs) Nkechinyere Nkem Iwe said her association has handled a number of projects since it took over office in March 2021.
Some of the projects include putting the finishing touches on the Skills Acquisition Centre started by her predecessor, purchasing customized uniforms, purchasing of an 18-seater bus and purchasing modern equipment for the tailoring section of their Skills Acquisition Centre.
Going by the theme of the 2024 IWD Celebration, Mrs Iwe said no investment in a woman was a waste.
“With the right and adequate investment in women, the dividend will be realized in their husbands, children and society at large,” she said.
Chairperson on the occasion, Chief (Mrs) Nnenna Obewu Onwuka gave kudos to the women who fought for gender equality.
She urged women not to use their widowhood negativity, but use it to their advantage by being positive in all they do.
The guest speaker and former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Joy Nwabueze in a lecture, urged women to stay focused and avoid distractions.
A highlight was awards bestowed on some deserving women, including the Accountant General of Abia State, Dr Njum Nnenna Uma-Onyemenam, Dr. Chioma Uche-Ume, wife of the General Overseer of Power Word Ministries, Prof Nnenna Oke and Mrs Amaka Chimegeiro.
