From Abel Leonard, Lafia
In preparation for International NGO Day, the Nasarawa State government has announced plans to establish regulations aimed at enhancing the operations of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) within the state.
Ms Margaret Elayo, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Social Services and Non-Governmental Organizations, highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring the effective functioning of NGOs during a press conference held in Lafia on Sunday.
Elayo emphasized the importance of regulating NGO activities to prevent duplication and ensure optimal utilisation of resources.
“When I assumed office as commissioner, the first thing we do as a ministry was to set up a platform to have the records and numbers of NGOs in the state.” This platform aims to streamline NGO efforts and prevent overlap in service delivery.
The Commissioner further emphasised the government’s stance on supporting NGOs genuinely committed to making a difference in the community. She warned against organizations that merely seek financial benefits without actively engaging in meaningful work.
“We will not condone any NGO that creates a platform to get the benefit and not doing the work,” she asserted.
Acknowledging the significant contributions of NGOs to the well-being of vulnerable populations in Nasarawa state, Elayo commended their efforts. “NGOs are unsung heroes, tirelessly working to uplift marginalised communities, protect the environment, and advocate for human rights,”.
As the world celebrates International NGO Day on February 27th, Elayo called for increased collaboration between stakeholders to support NGOs’ initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
She reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to fostering partnerships and providing necessary support to advance humanitarian and social services.
Daily Sun gathered that the World NGO Day serves as a reminder of the invaluable role NGOs play in addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and human rights violations.
