Imo police arrest officers who demanded N100,000 over rape of minor

The Imo State Police Command has arrested and detained its officers who allegedly demanded for a N100,000  kickback before they could intervene in a rape case of a 15-year-old girl brought before them at the State Police Command.

Imo  State police publicrelations officer, Henry Okoye, who confirmed their detention in a statement, said an Orderly Room Trial would be conducted on the officers involved.

A viral video of 15 years old girl from Umuekweye, Irete, Owerri West Local Government  of the state, who was allegedly raped by a 24  years  old, Wisdom Onyeaju at their family compound during the yuletide.

According to the elder sister of the victim in the video, the suspect who took advantage of the minor threatened her with a knife before forcefully having his way into her. The victim who returned home with other members of her family was said to have stayed home alone when others had gone to watch the village masquerade on display.

Okoye said: “The arrest followed credible information received by the Command from the family of the victim, who had earlier drawn public attention to the incident through a viral video circulating on social media.

“The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing thorough investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). Upon conclusion of investigation, he will be arraigned in court with the appropriate charge(s).

“Furthermore, the Command has identified and detained the police officers alleged to have engaged in professional misconduct in the handling of the case. An Orderly Room Trial has been scheduled to commence on Monday,  January 12 , 2026, in line with extant police regulations.

“The Imo State Police Command reiterates its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and accountability, assuring members of the public that justice will be served in this matter”. Okoye assured.”
