Ikeme remains Wolves’ first choice

Karl Ikeme

Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced Carl Ikeme as their number one for the upcoming 2017/18 season.

Last week, the goalkeeper was diagnosed with acute leukaemia after returning with abnormal results following a routine blood test.

The 31-year-old has since begun his battle to beat cancer with an immediate course of chemotherapy.

And to aid him in his recovery, the Wolves, despite the signature of John Ruddy on a two-year deal, have allowed the former Leicester City man hold on to the first choice goalkeeper jersey.

According to an official statement on club website, replicas of the stripe will be made available for purchase in stores. And the proceeds will be used for a well-known Birmingham-based charity, Cure Leukaemia. This is only one of the many initiatives the Molineux outfit have lined up to support the ten-time capped Super Eagle ahead of the season opener against his former side, Middlesbrough on August 5.

Ikeme would also be missing key World Cup and African Cup of Nations qualifying matches for Nigeria.
