Less than 24 hours after the resurgence of killings in the restive Bokkos and Mangu local government areas of Plateau State, the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced the redeployment of the state Commissioner of Police, Hassan Steve Yabnet.
Yabnet was posted to Benue State as commissioner. He has been replaced by a new police commissioner, Emmanuel Olugbemiga Asesina.
No fewer than ten people were said to have been killed when gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen invaded Kopnanle community in Mangu and Mandar Shar villages of Bokkos local government areas of the state.
Property worth millions of naira were also said to have been destroyed.
It was not ascertained if Yabnet’s redeployment has anything to do with the recent crisis.
A statement signed by the police spokesman, Alfred Alabo, said: “The Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has deemed it fit to post CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, as Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command to take over from his predecessor, Hassan Steve Yabanet, who has been transferred to take over as CP Benue State command.
“CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina is the 45th Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command. He hails from Boluwaduro Local Government Area of Osun State.
“He holds a Bachelor of Science, BSc (Hons) degree in Sociology from the University of Lagos, Akoka, in the year 1990. He proceeded to the University of Ibadan for his Master’s degree in Criminology in the year 1991.
“Adesina was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on 18th May, 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).”
