Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Sunday launched the Iru Ekun Security Network at the popular Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
A statement by Igboho’s media office said no fewer than 20,000 volunteers had joined the security outfit, which it claimed was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to strengthen community security and tackle criminal activities across Yorubaland and parts of Kwara and Niger states.
According to the statement, the launch in Oyo State followed similar inaugurations in Osun, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states, alongside engagements with traditional rulers and community leaders across Yorubaland.
The statement added that the security outfit had been collaborating with the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to combat kidnapping, killings and other security challenges in the South-West.
Igboho reportedly commended the large turnout of volunteers, describing it as a milestone that demonstrated the willingness of Oyo residents to participate actively in safeguarding their communities, irrespective of tribe, religion or political affiliation. He also disclosed that his earlier trip to Abuja was aimed at discussing ways to strengthen the security outfit’s responsibilities and expand its operations across the South-West.

“I was in Abuja this morning so that Iru Ekun’s security responsibilities can be further strengthened. This is because Iru Ekun is the brainchild of South-West traditional rulers, and it will continue to serve its purpose of promoting peace and effective security in our communities,” he said.
Igboho explained that his visit followed a call he received the previous night and was connected to engagements involving the Olubadan of Ibadanland. He thanked God, traditional rulers across the country and President Tinubu for what he described as the platform provided for members of Iru Ekun to interact and pursue their security objectives.
He also urged the volunteers to remain committed to their responsibilities, expressing confidence that their contributions would eventually be recognised. “Some people are still looking down on you, the volunteers. Soon, they will lobby you for positions,” he said.
Igboho also called on Nigerians, including members of the security network, to support Tinubu’s re-election bid in the forthcoming presidential election, urging them to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
