The Founder of the Igbo Heroes and Icons Foundation (IHIF), Chief Chinedu Nsofor, has commended President Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Bianca Ojukwu as Minister of Foreign Affairs, describing the decision as well deserved amid calls to address marginalisation of the South East.

In a statement released to journalists in Owerri, Nsofor urged the new minister to use her office for the good of the people, adding that her late husband would be proud of her achievements.

“Her appointment is commendable following the timely call for equity in Tinubu’s appointments. This is what we have been talking about in Igbo Heroes and Icons Foundation,” Nsofor stated.

Nsofor, who also serves as National Coordinator of the Igbo Presidency Project (IPP), said the move was long expected to tackle the marginalisation of Ndigbo in Nigeria. He reiterated the group’s stance that the South East should produce the country’s next president.

He noted that while many Nigerians possess strong credentials, few have been given the platform to lead, particularly compared to the Hausa/Fulani and Yoruba ethnic groups that have dominated the presidency and vice presidency since the Fourth Republic began.

“Nigeria does not utilize her best, hence most of these talents are utilized by the outside world where they exhibit classical competence and professionalism. The Igbo tribe parades a lot of this calibre of leadership materials, both in the past and present,” he said.

Nsofor cited Prof. Humphrey Nwosu’s conduct of the June 12, 1993 election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll, and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s global service as examples of Igbo excellence in leadership. “Even in the little they were allowed to handle they showed brilliance, uprightness and steadfast principle and integrity,” he added.

Similarly, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) hailed the appointment. COSEYL President General Goodluck Ibem described it as “not only timely but also a testament to her exceptional competence, diplomatic experience, and unwavering commitment to national service.”

“We commend Mr. President for the confidence reposed in her and for making a strategic decision that prioritizes merit, capacity, and proven track record,” Ibem said.

He expressed confidence that under Ojukwu’s leadership, Nigeria’s foreign policy would see renewed vigor, strategic engagement, and enhanced global representation.
