From Olanrewaju Lawal Birnin Kebbi State
The Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has promised that his administration would not treat the workers as second-class citizens, but ensure they get minimum wage befitting the current economic situation in the country.
Idris, who stated this while addressing the workers at the Haliru Abdul Stadium in Birnin Kebbi, yesterday, said he would not pronounce the amount which would not be workable until the necessary committee deliberates on the issue and agree on the amount alongside the labour leaders.
“I don’t want to make any pronouncement on the new minimum wage. If we are going to make any pronouncement, labour leaders must be involved. I don’t want to rush on the issue. We shall set up a committee and work out a workable minimum wage.”
Governor Idris also explained that his administration had been paying worker’s salaries, pensions and gratuities without any delay on 24th or 25th of every month, stressing that his administration was about to complete the state secretariat, which would harbour all the workers’ offices in the state.
He said that about N986 million has been paid as school fees of indigene students across the state, N995 million paid to get the results of the students released, and over N501 million paid to settle the school fees of students studying in Indian and Egypt, respectively.
